Bonus Content: Rao’s Hit $1 Billion. Campbell’s Balance Sheet Is the Problem.
Hi Friend,
Just wanted to let you know you can now get a free copy of my new strategy guide here:
How to Master the Retirement Trade [PDF]
What’s the Retirement Trade?
It’s a simple trading opportunity that appears almost every trading day, between 9:30 and 10:45 am EST where traders are making between $300-$1,100+ per contract.
One of my favorite parts about this trade is how predictable it is. It occurs about 3-5 times each week. And once you know what you’re looking for, and how to enter/exit the trade, this could become another nice stream of income for you.
I’m not sure how long I’ll leave this guide up for. So do yourself a favor and take 5 seconds to download it now. At least you’ll have a copy stored for future use!

Rao’s Hit $1 Billion. Campbell’s Balance Sheet Is the Problem.

The debate inside every institutional portfolio committee reviewing CPB right now is not about Rao’s. It is about whether the balance sheet can survive long enough to let Rao’s matter.
The Case for Rao’s as a Real Growth Engine
Rao’s Homemade surpassed $1 billion in trailing 12-month net sales, a milestone that validated Campbell’s $2.7 billion Sovos Brands bet, which closed on March 12, 2024. The momentum is genuine. The total Rao’s brand grew consumption 15% in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, with sauce up 13%, driven by household penetration gains, velocity growth, and new products in the creamy line. Rao’s performance outside of pasta sauce, including soup, pasta, and frozen, grew 17.7% for the full fiscal year.
The strategic logic goes deeper than top-line growth. On May 4, 2026, Campbell’s closed a $286 million deal for 49% of La Regina, the supplier that produces Rao’s tomato-based sauces. With household penetration at 18.9% compared to Prego’s 32%, Rao’s has significant white space for growth. This is what a durable runway looks like in packaged food.
The Bear Case Is the Income Statement
One brand cannot fix a company bleeding across the other half of its portfolio. Campbell’s net sales fell 5% to $9.7 billion in fiscal 2026, with gross margins contracting 230 basis points to 28.1%. In its fiscal 2026 filings and disclosures, Campbell tied margin pressure to higher costs and volatility across commodities and the supply chain, including tariff-related impacts. Snacks, which carries key brands including Goldfish and Snyder’s, saw operating earnings fall 34% in the fourth quarter.
The debt burden from the Sovos acquisition forced a dramatic signal to income investors. In early September 2026, Campbell’s cut its quarterly dividend about 36%, from $0.39 to $0.25, and said the move would support faster debt repayment and balance sheet flexibility. As of August 2, 2026, Campbell reported total liabilities of about $11.5 billion. Beginning in fiscal 2027, Campbell’s is launching a new program targeting $500 million in cost savings by fiscal 2030. That is a four-year runway to rebuild margins while tariffs and inflation remain elevated.
What Investors Are Missing
The framing of Rao’s as a rescue asset misses the more uncomfortable question: what happens to the salty snacks portfolio? CEO Mick Beekhuizen has pointed to coming restructuring work in snacks, including rationalizing parts of the portfolio and consolidating manufacturing nodes. That is executive language for potential divestitures.
The divergence between segments, with Rao’s posting double-digit growth while salty snacks decline sharply, suggests Campbell’s may need to make difficult portfolio decisions to restore sustainable profitable growth. Professional allocators should be asking not what Rao’s is worth inside Campbell’s, but whether its value would be better released through a separation.
Stocks to Watch
- CPB: The quarterly dividend now stands at $0.25 per share, and the Street consensus has been a “Reduce” rating with a roughly $19.88 target price. The turnaround case rests entirely on cost execution and snacks stabilization.
- GIS (General Mills): Campbell’s snacks weakness opens distribution shelf space. Any Snyder’s or Cape Cod rationalization benefits competitors across the salty category.
- KHC (Kraft Heinz): Campbell’s primary branded competitors include General Mills with Progresso and Unilever with Knorr. A prolonged Campbell’s restructuring extends the window for peers to press on center-store share.
